The Veneto is historically a very important wine region in north east Italy. Veneto has overtaken Puglia and Sicilia to become Italy’s largest wine-producing region. The Veneto region produces many DOC wines but they need to be carefully selected. They are not all quality wines due to enlargements of the DOC zones and by permitting higher production. The Corvina grape is capable of making beautiful red wines as in Valpolicella and the Garganega has the same effect with the white wines as in the Soave. Magnificent Prosecco sparkling wines are produced on the steep hills of Valdobbiadene.
