Friuli-Venezia Giulia is situated in the far north-eastern corner of Italy bordering Slovenia and Austria. It was only in the 1960s that Friuli was recognised as the 1st region to produce pure, fresh, fruity white wines. This was credited to Mario Schiopetto who applied temperature control and introduced the German wine-making philosophy . This style of wine-making and the large number of wines produced by each single estate are characterizing features of this region. This is a region that has been occupied by many cultures over the centuries and this resulted in the import of different kinds of grapes that can be found amongst indigenous grape varieties. Many wines from the region are made with a single variety and labelled accordingly. The most prestigious sub districts are located in the hill zone adjacent to the Slovenian border: Colli Orientali en Collio with calcareousmarl soils. Friuli produces in terms of percentage most of the DOC wines taking taking the Piemonte and Trentino- Alto Adige into account. Not only white wines but beautiful red wines are also produced from the Cabernet, Merlot, Pino Nero en the indigenous Refosco, Schiopettino.
